World Water Day 2012

by Paul March 22nd, 2012 - No Comments »

Today is World Water Day and in Toronto MINT is celebrating it with movies, music and art.

Every year this day is celebrated around the world. The point of this day is to raise more awareness of how precious and important our world’s fresh water is. It is also a day to think about new ways to use sustainable management when dealing with our water supply.

MINT (Made IN Toronto) Film Festival is playing a role by screening films, live music, art and a today only photo exhibit put on by WWF Canada. This event is happening today at the Royal Ontario Museum in downtown Toronto.

Tis’ the season to grow!

by Paul March 16th, 2012 - No Comments »

Spring is just around the corner and that means getting that vegetable garden started. My wife loves to garden and I love the savings it yields us by growing our own vegetables and fruit each year.

The fruit is easy, we have 2 apple trees and one pear tree and raspberry bushes in our yard. The vegetables on the other hand take a little more patience. This year we are growing most of the vegetables we will need; tomato’s, cucumber, broccoli, carrots, peas, peppers, celery and lettuce.

Tomorrow here in Toronto is the third annual Scarborough Seedy Saturday. This is a great little event where you can meet fellow gardeners, trade tips and attend workshops. Trade seeds with other seed savers and of course purchase some as well. There will be a kids zone for your little ones to play so they don’t get too bored talking about seeds all day as well as a Live Green Toronto booth where they will be educating interested people in how to green your neighborhoods.

Spring is upon us. Grow your own veggies and fruit. The best food to eat is the food you grow yourself, no pesticides, no corporations, no travel time etc, etc etc.

In case you haven’t heard yet, Toronto has a new eco-friendly car wash service for all you green and healthy people out there!

It all started when two York University students developed “Washly.” Washly is the new eco-friendly car wash service specifically designed to use less water using a waterless car cleaner that has been featured on Dragon’s Den named GoClean. It’s a simple spray on and wipe down.

Washly will only cost you $20 for any vehicle and it’ll be open during the hours of 9am-5pm. You must sign-up before heading on over to Mississauga where it will first be launched. Use your phone or computer to check-in by putting in your car’s license plate, description, and parked location, request a time and pay via PayPal.

Is Your House Made From Beer Cans?

by samantha March 5th, 2012 - No Comments »

Okay okay, maybe it isn’t but check out this super fascinating documentary below called Garbage Warrior which was posted on YouTube last month. It shows architect Michael Reynolds and his green partners dedicating their time and energy in advancing the art of “Earthship Biotecture” by building self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function converge in eco-harmony (as stated at the bottom of the video on YouTube).

Let me know what you think in the comments section below!

Brangelina Builds an Eco-Friendly Theme Park!

by samantha February 27th, 2012 - No Comments »

That’s right folks, the world’s first eco-friendly theme park is being built in the south of France by none other than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie!

Apparently, they came up with this idea when their son Maddox pitched it to them. I can see why they’d be doing this considering they have so many children.

The only downside to this is that it won’t be open to the public seeing that they are building it in their private chateau! It’s also underground and will be covered by a turf reports http://www.ecorazzi.com/2012/02/27/angelina-jolie-and-brad-pitt-to-build-eco-friendly-theme-park/.

If you’re already jealous then I don’t want to burst your bubble but I guess I will have to because this unique park will have a massive pool, slides, tunnels, boat rides, a pirate island with a castle, a go-kart track and even an old-fashioned carousel, according to http://www.ecorazzi.com/2012/02/27/angelina-jolie-and-brad-pitt-to-build-eco-friendly-theme-park/. They also state that the park will be powered by roof-top solar panels and supplying water that will be reusable.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been eco-friendly for quite some time now and continue to be! I love it! Could we love this Hollywood power couple any more than we already do?

Top 10 Fuel Efficient Cars for 2012 by Category!

by Paul February 24th, 2012 - No Comments »

About a week ago I blogged about the crazy gas prices and the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto as well as the fact that I’ve been keeping my eyes on very fuel efficient vehicles.

My father went to the show and brought me the official program from the auto show. Obviously I’m not the only one interested in a more fuel efficient car as there is heavy emphasis throughout the program on cars that save fuel.

The program has been guiding me to cars that are getting 4-5L/100km which is absolutely amazing. Here’s a great article that explains the Top 10 EcoENERGY Winners for 2012. 6 of the 11 cars that made the list have electric motors; see where this is going?

The Top 10 Fuel Efficient Cars for 2012 by Category:

  • Two Seater – (tie) Honda CR-Z & Smart Fortwo
  • Subcompact – Mitsubishi i-MiEV
  • Compact – Chevrolet Volt
  • Mid-Size – Nissan Leaf
  • Full Size – Hyundai Sonata
  • Station Wagon – Toyota Prius V
  • Pickup Truck – Toyota Tacoma
  • Special Purpose Vehicle – Ford Escape Hybrid
  • Minivan – Mazda5
  • Large Van – Ford Transit Connect

For myself there are some serious contenders here. Before I read this article and received the auto show program I was hoping that I could get something around the 6L/100km range as mentioned in my previous post but now my heart is set on something that is going to give me 4-5L/100km. Wish me luck, the hunt just stepped up another level.

Not getting enough bang for your buck at the pumps?

by Paul February 17th, 2012 - No Comments »

So today marks the first day of the Canadian International Auto Show which has been held on a yearly basis in downtown Toronto for over 38 years. I used to go every year as a kid with my old man but I’ve never really been a huge car guy to be honest and for the past 15-20 years maybe only been once or twice.

I do however drive a car on a daily basis and I do have an issue with fuel prices as I’m sure most people that drive on a regular basis can relate to. I have been actively looking to “Green” my ride for quite sometime. There are now more than ever fantastically fuel efficient automobiles on the market.

I have my eye on quite a few and considering I’m looking for something in the 6L/100km range my options are quite large, thankfully!

I found a great link to a fuel consumption rating website if you want to find out your car’s mileage or any other car available in Canada you have been thinking about purchasing, have a look here.  Website from Natural Resources of Canada.

Gas prices please come down! I beg of thee.
