When you look at the picture above, the first thing you must be thinking is what is that? “Message in 1,100 Bottles” is the name of this eco-sculpture.
Apparently, this mineral water bottle statue made up of 1,100 bottles, was created to remind staff at a travel company how many plastic bottles are thrown away every day which are used in Cyprus from just one of their hotels. Looking at this eco-sculpture also helps to remind them how to figure out a way to reduce plastic waste generated from holidays. Now isn’t that just an awesome message?
At the Thomas Cook offices in Peterborough, UK, they have now started using refillable cups instead of water bottles to drink water because if you didn’t know already, drinking water from plastic bottles is not such a great idea! When you’re done with them and you throw them in the garbage, they are sent to landfill sites and can take between 20 and a thousand years to degrade. And for those of you who are out and about at the beach, whenever you throw a water bottle into our oceans, marine mammals and seabirds feed on them, mistaking photo-degraded particles for fish and plankton! Another interesting fact that you may not already be aware of is that an estimated 50,000 pieces of plastic per square kilometre floats through our seas, much of which has gathered in The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. So let’s try to avoid using water bottles and continue putting efforts towards keeping our world healthy and green!
