Fresh Fuzz

The “earth” without “art” is just “eh.”

by Angelo October 24th, 2011 - No Comments »

I’ve always had an appreciation for visual art. Over the years I’ve dabbled a little myself, more as a creative outlet than any other reason. I just needed an avenue for my creativity to be expressed. I don’t know why I just need to create. I’ve gone through a number of phases during my life, painting, writing, photography, acting, web design and sales, I suppose, to a lesser extent. I find one of the most interesting points in the creative process is when a child goes from simply playing with paint or clay to having their work praised and displayed. As soon as the first piece makes it to the fridge door, the child’s attitude toward art is forever changed. It no longer becomes “art for art’s sake” it becomes a measurable … it becomes “fridge worthy”.

A point of discovery for me was when I differentiated between the child as an artist and the parent who appreciated it, hanging it with care on the refrigerator door. As a parent, I too hung masterpieces on the front of the fridge, and to me they were masterpieces. Why? Because in my mind there was no separation between art and artist. Iloved the artist and therefore I loved the art.

When I first moved to British Columbia I had an interesting experience at a house party. The gentleman that was hosting the party was a painter and painted “white paintings”. That’s right, just white paint and canvas. When I first saw the paintings I thought to myself, “This guy is a bit of a nutbar.” I ended up speaking with him about his paintings and in about forty minutes, I had developed an appreciation for his art, mostly because I had an appreciation for him as an artist.

I am excited about creating an exhibition space in our Vancouver store because not only will it be visually stimulating, but it gives me the opportunity to meet with the artists and find out what is important to them, why they paint what they paint, and what their history is.

I hope that you take time out to join us here in Kitsilano and have a look at what some of Vancouver’s local artists are up to, and learn a little of their story.

Where do those kids get their energy … for the school?

by Angelo June 17th, 2011 - No Comments »

Rockridge secondary school will have over a dozen solar panels installed on the roof of the school thanks to a bright idea from it’s students.

Rockridge is proud to be one of eleven by British Columbia’s Solar BC initiative. Thanks to the leg work done by the school’s environmental club, spearheaded by Callum Kelpin and along with Kelsey Dennison and Lisa Tejpar , the school will get a grant up for $20,000 to have the solar panels installed. The students themselves worked to have the application filled and get the teachers on board.

The solar panels are to be installed this summer and will generate approximately 3.45 kilowatts of energy every day. This should take a bite out of the daily consumption of around 100 kilowatts.

With a program on one of the school’s computers, students will have the ability to read how much energy is being generated by the solar panels at any given time.

Callum, Kelsey and Lisa are all passionate about the environment, which they feel is becoming more commonplace amongst their peers.

Bed Bugs- Carriers of the “Super Bug” Vancouver?

by Crystal May 12th, 2011 - No Comments »

Good Night

Sleep Tight

Don’t Let the Bed Bugs

BITE

As many of you know who live in Vancouver, we have had our fair share of issues with stubborn bed bugs and dust mites.

It has definitely not been uncommon to receive the occasional phone call here at our Vancouver Essentia Store about bed bugs, and other such things like dust mites.

Yes, our Essentia mattresses are dust mite deterrent, and bed bugs would have a heck of a hard time getting into our mattresses too!  It’s just with bed bugs, they can be anywhere… That is, they can hang out behind curtains, in your electrical outlets, in your walls, your clothes, and endless other places.

And now, it may be these blood sucking bed bugs could be carrying the “Super Bug“*… And as such, it would be a good idea to get rid of any bed bug issue you may have quickly.

It really doesn’t come as such a surprise though, as fleas and mosquitos have long since been suspected of carrying ugly viruses, and now we can questionably add bed bugs.

One last thought, if you are moving to a new apartment or house, as it’s that time of year! Ask your land lord, or your real estate agent if there has ever been a problem before with bed bugs.  While you are at it, you should probably ask about carpenter ants, rodents, and mold too. Good luck everyone.

Stay Healthy, Drink Tap Water Canucks’

by Crystal May 4th, 2011 - No Comments »

Here we are in Vancouver, with some of the cleanest water in the
world, yet we still drink large amounts of water from plastic
bottles. These plastic bottles filled with water come from all over
the world. Who is to say their water is better than ours?

It is funny how we will buy a bottle of water instead of asking for
water when we are out exploring our city. Yet, when we are in our
homes, we will drink from our taps. Sure, maybe we have a filter, but
the water from the tap is typically just fine the way it is. Why must we
think the water coming from our own taps at home is any different than
that at restaurants, coffee houses, or fast food places?

What is wrong with our tap water? Do we need to have a campaign
promoting drinking water from all of our taps in Vancouver?

Sure, at home we can use a filtration system, but a lot of coffee
houses will have this hooked up to the water that they use to make
coffee and other drinks as well. Yet, people will still buy a bottle
of water instead of having water from a tap.

Just try to ask for water at a local fast food restaurant, in a
mall, or even a coffee shop, for that matter. At times, the
conversation will probably go something like this:

“Could I please have a glass of water?”

“We have Evian, Dasani, or I think there is probably Aquafina bottles
in the cooler as well, just over there.”

“No, I’m sorry, I meant, could I please have a glass of water.”

The cashier will then give you a quizzical look of, “Are you sure…”

He or she will then say, “You do know it is out of the tap, right?”

Then you reply “yes”, and finally you have a glass of water.

How hard was that?

Save a couple of dollars when you are out and pack a reusable cup or
water bottle, or ask for a glass of water.

Plastic bottles filled with water are temperature sensitive and if
cooled or heated can release harmful chemicals and plastics into the
water.

Here’s to some of the best water in the world! Save the earth, and
when you have an urge to go for the bottled water, take a breath and
tell yourself that tap water is just as good, and most likely way
better, for you!

It may take courage to ask for some tap water, but nobody learned to
walk without taking the first step!  It also takes courage to win the Stanley Cup!

Go Canucks Go!!!!!

Little Charlie Tucker- A Reforestation Camp Site

by Crystal April 21st, 2011 - No Comments »

Little Charlie Tucker was so excited. The long weekend was fast approaching and he and his dad were going fishing up in the interior of British Columbia. He wasn’t sure how he could sleep because he kept thinking of the mountains and rivers he would pass on his trip up to the lake with his dad in the morning.

Mr. Tucker was a master planner, and he had planned a very special weekend for his son and himself, informing his son that, “We’re going to stay at a reforestation campsite and drive a short distance to the lake each day, Charlie. Better pack some warm clothes, as it can become quite cold at night up there, especially when we are in a tent.”

“I’ve already put extra wool socks in his back pack, some snacks, the water jug, and of course, the first aid kit just in case,” Mrs. Tucker replied.

“I also packed some socks, mom, and I have my winter sweaters, too, and my gumboots. Can I bring Lucky?” Charlie asked.

“No, I think your kitten will miss our dog, and besides, Lucky would prefer not to be left alone in the car or tent when you two are out on the lake fishing,” Mrs. Tucker replied.

“Now that you put it that way, Lucky shouldn’t be coming on our fishing trip,” Charlie replied.

As always, Charlie was curious, and so he asked, “What’s a reforestation camping site? That’s a lot to say dad,” little Charlie said laughing, as he rubbed his mouth.

“A reforestation campground is a place where people can go and camp while taking part in a sustainable process. You see, unlike other campgrounds where we would have to pay to pitch our tent, Charlie, this campground is happy for us to pitch our tent for free as long as we plant twenty trees each,” Mr. Tucker responded.

“Wow, that’s really cool, dad, but how big are these trees?” little Charlie questioned with a look of concern.

“They are very small trees, maybe a foot tall, and my plan would be to go back each year for an annual trip with you to see how much bigger they have grown,” he replied.

“Oh, they are just baby trees. That’s really exciting, dad,” Charlie responded.

“You know, at this campsite we will learn how our twenty trees each will be helping to rebuild the natural habitats of different species and ecosystems, too,” Mr. Tucker said while walking to the kitchen.

“What is a habitat, dad, and an ecosystem?” Charlie asked.

“A ‘habitat’ is a fancy word for a natural environment where a particular species of animal lives,” Mr. Tucker replied.

However, before he could answer the second part of Charlie’s original question, his son asked quickly, “What type of species would be living in the new forest we are going to plant, dad?”

“Oh, bears, and cougars, and birds, and squirrels,” he replied.

“Bears, oh wow, real bears,” Charlie blurted out.

“Speaking of which, you two mustn’t leave any food out, just in case one of those bears is hungry,” Mrs. Tucker responded.

“We won’t,” both Mr. Tucker and Charlie said in unison.

“So, an ‘ecosystem’, Charlie, to finish answering your question, is also a place that consists of all the organisms that would live in a particular area, but it also takes into consideration what makes up the habitat these organisms live in such as air, soil, water, trees, and the list goes on,” Mr. Tucker said.

“Then the ocean is a different ecosystem to the rainforest which we are going to help replenish tomorrow?” Charlie asked for clarification.

“Yes, it is a very different ecosystem, you’ve got it,” Mr. Tucker responded.

“I can’t wait to plant trees, dad. I’m going to go and pack my volleyball knee pads right now,” Charlie said, as he slid out of the kitchen in his sock feet.

“Knee pads, did you mention he needed those earlier today?” Mr. Tucker questioned his wife.

“Nope, your son just thought ahead as to what he would need when planting trees,” she replied with a smile.

“Ha,” Mr. Tucker said is amazement, continuing with, “I guess he learned that from you!

Class 101: Finding a Suitable Water Filter

by Crystal March 22nd, 2011 - No Comments »

We live in British Columbia where we have some of the best water in the world, but even so, the water just seems to taste better when using a great water filtration system–or, at least in the City of Vancouver it does.

However, what I find to be a great water filtration system, you may think is not up to par, or vice versa. Therefore, how do you find a water filtration system that suits your needs, your budget and still protects your health against such contaminants as E. coli, and lead. It is better to be safe than sorry with contaminants!

In addition to sustaining life, water has many other benefits. By drinking more water at home than other drinks that are probably readily available in your fridge and/or cupboards, you will be cutting down on your plastic bottle and packaging waste by quite a bit, and you will be helping to hydrate your body with the world’s best detoxifier, water.

You could conserve a lot of water if you did not have to leave your tap running for ten seconds before you filled your glass with water, could you not. With a water filter, you could fill your glass up right away!
