Being an environmentalist means different things to different people, so I thought it would be interesting to look at this broad concept from my perspective.
To an onlooker, an environmentalist may first be seen as a person who would like to protect the environment from deteriorating into a lesser functional state. Such deterioration may happen in many ways, but the goal at the heart of an environmentalist’s endeavour is to bring balance back into the an ecological system.
Environmentalists are, for the most part, impassioned people that have spent time becoming educated about a particular interest, everything from the monstrous plastic island in the pacific ocean to a single species of animal threatened by human presence. It is important for Environmentalists to understand what the environment was like prior to human activity, so that it can be compared to the way it is now. By having a firm understanding of the past, it becomes almost intuitive to find a way to a healthier future.
Environmentalists can be said to be stewards, by wanting to look out for, and conserve, the natural environment. They can also be said to be teachers that bring knowledge of how to do these things to society as a whole.
The underlying philosophy of being an environmentalist should be, to bring harmony back into nature.
Being concerned for the environment is a simple task, and actually doing something about it is equally so. Knowing this, along with having respectful world view, makes taking small steps in a positive direction both pleasurable and fulfilling .
Everyone has their own opinions of what should be done and what should not be done, and how people should do things. What you do is not as important as, that you do.
Old Man “These blue boxes are a waste of time.”
Little Boy: “Why do you say that, sir?”
Old Man “Because people only recycle when it’s convenient”
Little Boy: “But isn’t that still more than not recycling?”
What on Earth is an Environmentalist?
We all are, in our own little way.
