Cashmere Sheets … Goat, Better, Best !

by Angelo May 21st, 2012 - No Comments »

I came across a friend’s social media posting indicating that she wanted cashmere sheets and I thought to myself, “Now that would be wicked” (as in wick-ed, slang for something excellent, not wicked as in wicked away, making a very bad play on words). With a bit of internet sleuthing, I found out that Manrico Calzoni decided to fill the need a few years ago by introducing cashmere sheets at a paltry $5,200 for a king size set. The set includes two sheets and two pillow cases. If you want custom colours, decoration or trim the prices go up. The silky softness of the wicking wool maintains a comfortable sleeping temperature by moderating both hot and cold temperatures. With a two year warranty, the machine washable sheets are guaranteed for a little over seven dollars a night. The downside is pressing king size sheets would be a bit of a pain. The fabric is woven from the belly hair of Mongolian goats and took five years to develop.

I have to admit, I am a little curious … anyone up for a visit to Milan? They adorn the beds in the Presidential Suite at the Hotel Principe di Savoia … three bedrooms for a mere $13,000 per night.

Vorrei che la mia colazione a letto per favore.

3 Billion Gallons of Poison and a Weed-tarded Future

by Angelo April 30th, 2012 - 2 Comments »

The journal Archives of Toxicology has published information that shows that the common herbicide Roundup can damage human DNA diluted to amazingly lower concentrations than currently used in genetically modified crops. How low? If you took half a tablespoon of the herbicide and diluted it in a gallon of water, human DNA would be under threat.

The extremely popular glyphosate has a wide range of potential adverse effects on health which, for the most part, are minimized as well as under-reported. It’s also interesting to note that the combinations of chemicals used in Roundup aid in increasing the toxicity of carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting poison much the same as the chemicals in cigarettes aid in the absorption of nicotine.   In 2007 88,000 tons of glyphosate were used in US alone, and most likely hundreds of millions of additional tons globally. More an more evidence shows that it is resistant to biodegradation and now contaminates the air, rain and groundwater. If you crunch the numbers, in 2007 alone, 3,030,148,000 gallons of DNA corrupting water was created in the US in a single year.

My question to some of you is: Why is Monsanto in your investment portfolio?

Maria Marcinek – Artist in Acrylics

by Angelo March 30th, 2012 - No Comments »

Maria Marcinek was born in Poland where at an early age she began training her artistic abilities to reflect her fascination with the world of light and colour.

Maria moved to British Columbia in 1992, ultimately settling down in Port Moody (City of Arts). Living on the west coast and a few minutes away from Belacarra Regional Park she became deeply inspired with the beauty of the surrounding lakes, streams, and luscious forests. This love of nature and surroundings fuels her growing passion for painting. Maria chose acrylic as her medium of choice to its richness of colour, flexibility, and ease of layering.

Please stop by the store during the month of April (beginning April 6th) an see this local artist’s work.

Windmills, Wooden Shoes and Oil Paint

by Angelo March 4th, 2012 - No Comments »

Anouk Jonker set up her showing of paintings on Thursday, and I was enchanted by this young Dutch painter and her mother. I’m always interested in the relationship between artist and work. I like to draw the connecting lines in my head from the painter’s inner being to what I see hanging on the wall. I am often intrigued by what is shown and by what is hidden, perhaps my curiosity is piqued by knowing that I hide and display certain things in certain ways in my own “exhibition” of art. The word that best describes Anouk and her mother is “grace”. There is something truly lovely about European women and each nationality has their own distinct sensibility, and for me the Dutch women certainly have a sense of grace. Perhaps it is because my mother was born in Holland and I like to think that my mother was full of grace.

Nevertheless Anouk’s work now hangs in our store, and as I look at it, day after day, it grows on me. Initially I didn’t care for the muted colours that she used and I held a certain affinity for the piece called “Dodge” (Which is, by the way, the smartest word to put on the front of a truck.) I liked it immediately for two reasons. It was reminiscent of a youth spent in rural Ontario and it had a vibrancy that was lacking in the other pieces. But as sat in their midst, other elements of my youth begin to surface. The painting “Windmolen” reminded me of a Dutch landscape that used to hang in my grandmother’s house, which stood beside a farmer’s field. I often slept over at my grandmother’s house listening to the cars and trucks passing on Highway 24 and as the early evening light began to dim, I would see the cows in Mr. Thompson’s field. When I look at that painting I feel like I’m seven again.

If you have a moment, stop by yourself to see what feelings and memories Anouk’s paintings stir in you. You can find the hours and location here.

Be Who You Are – It is okay to be Different

by Matt March 2nd, 2012 - No Comments »

When I started out thinking about writing a blog on self reliance, I thought it would turn out to have strategies on how to survive, if, heaven forbid, our society were to have some unfortunate event like an Earthquake.  As I searched for techniques to further my self reliant abilities, that I would then share with you, Ralf Waldo Emerson kept popping up ‘everywhere’!

Ralf Waldo Emerson- Self Reliance!

You may be familiar with some of this brilliant man’s quotes that pop up all over the web, or you might have read some of his essays!  If you have not come across him yet, I think you would be wise to read some of his material, or at the very least, wiser for it!

Not a man for small ideals, but a global thinker that created the Transcendentalist movement with words that are poetic and enlightening; he is anything, but boring.  He loved the natural world and appreciated all life.

Please take into consideration, it is best to read his essays yourself along with his timeless quotes, for each of us can interpret the written word differently.

From dabbling in Emerson’s Self Reliance writings, I find he is trying to bestow on our minds, that it is important to trust ourselves, and be who we are meant to be!  You see, we all have possibilities to be great, to make our own decisions, to be individual and enlightened.

At times, it is a struggle these days to stay true to the self, and in the past it wasn’t that easy either. No man standing alone didn’t face some form of opposition, right?

Interestingly, Emerson thinks trust in ourselves today is created by our past actions and how well we listened to ourselves in the past. We can work on trusting ourselves now…  The more we trust ourselves, the truer we are to ourselves.  And, it is okay to be different.

Angelo’s Top Five Companies for “Spr-een” Cleaning

by Angelo February 27th, 2012 - No Comments »

Okay it’s getting to that time of year again. Out with the old in with the new to me. I say “new to me” because I’m not much of a new clothes guy. I tend to shop at consignment and second hand stores. I like the value and I figure the less I buy new the less that need to be manufactured and the smaller my carbon footprint. I recently cleaned out my closet and donated a good number of items to my local charity. The clothes are still in good shape and wearable, I’ve just gotten tired of them. What this annual ritual ultimately leads to is … spring cleaning. I’m actually looking forward to it. It always ends up as a bit of a purge and leads to a more dynamic life as I spend more time outdoors.

There are a number of products on the market that can make a difference to the planet and here are a few of them.

Seventh Generation has a mission statement that states “To inspire a revolution that nurtures the health of the next seven generations”. I can get on board with that. Their all purpose cleaner effectively removes grease, grime and dirt without creating harsh fumes. This non-toxic, VOC-free formula works great on marble, granite, stainless steel and many other surfaces.

Ecover is a Belgian company that has been around since 1980. Their products are plant and mineral based and garnered them numerous awards. In 1992 they built one of the worlds first green factories. With a mission statement that reads “Making a Healthy & Sustainable Lifestyle Easy” they’re my kind of company. I kind of like the subtle Chamomile and Marigold fragrance and the and gentle milk whey is ideal for anyone with sensitive skin.

Method has a great concentrated laundry detergent. I never did see the sense in shipping water and the smaller packages make for smaller waste. Their 600ml bottle does 50 loads of laundry and not only that, their plant-based formula has a 35% smaller carbon footprint than conventional detergents.

Mrs. Meyers has a line of products base on aromatherapy and free from ammonia, chlorine, bleach, paraben and phosphates. None of them are tested on animals and the line was founded by Mrs. Meyers’ daughter. But as life will have it the big boys stepped in and it’s now owned by S.C. Johnson. Looking for a surface scrub? How about basil, lavender, lemon verbena or geranium scented.

Finally Clorox brought out a line of green cleaners called “Green Works”. Props to them for actually listing the ingredients on the side of the bottle. (Yes I know Seventh Generation has been doing it for a while now.) Most of their products are coconut based with plant oils. Their toilet bowl cleaner is a gel formula which is 99% naturally derived.

Okay the sun will be shining soon and the beach (not bleach) will beckoning so I best be getting a move on with that spring green cleaning … yeah, spreen cleaning, call me corny.

There is a small participation fee of $15.00’s

Re-enforce your Platform bed with your Health in Mind!!!

by Crystal February 14th, 2012 - No Comments »

I’ve been smiling at work today “a lot”, since a kindred young family who had recently purchased an Essentia Classic 8 King came into our showroom, and brought my coworker and I chocolate truffles!  It was such a caring gesture and it made my day.  I am still smiling.

This family is also wanting to help other Essentia customers… How? They mentioned that, if another Essentia customer ever needed to re-enforce their current bed-frame with more pieces of wood a.k.a. slats, to choose the non-toxic plywood from Home Depot called PureBond. Home Depot was able to cut this PureBond plywood into slats for their bed frame with little hassle, and it gave their bed frame a lot more support.

When looking into this product recommendation, I read that this non-toxic technology for plywood uses a soy-Based Adhesive with no Formaldehyde to adhere their hardwood plywood panels together!

You might be wondering why a bed frame would need to have more slats added?  Simply, some frames have slats that are too wide apart and don’t offer your mattress enough support.  By simply re-enforcing your frame with more slats, you give your platform bed a stronger and more supportive base for your mattress.

I hope this tip may help you too, if you need to add some support to your bed frame, or even if you need plywood for other purposes.
